The
Man He Sees In You
ABOUT
THE SONG:
“The Man He Sees In
You” is about a child
who is enamorate of and worships
a dead-beat parent. I know
we've all heard of it and
probably know someone who
is in that situation, but
get this.
My husband and I were dropping
off our daughter with her
aunt and cousin so we could
go out for the afternoon and
evening. When we arrived,
my nephew was sitting on the
couch bouncing up and down
anxiously. He had his shoes
on. His backpack was strapped
on and filled with his over-night
things. He was clutching some
kind of construction paper
creation I couldn't identify.
He was awaiting the arrival
of his (we'll keep this as
anonymous as possible) parent
who did not live in the home.
This was around 3PM. The
parent was actually due at
noon. When we returned that
night around 10:30, there
was my nephew asleep on the
couch. Shoes still on, back-pack
secure and the construction
treasure at his side. What
else can I say?

MAN HE SEES IN YOU

You show up on his birthday
Just like Santa Clause in
May
With a truckload of "Surprise,
Daddy’s here"
You say you missed your little
boy
And you hand him a new toy
But what you’re thinking
is "That’ll hold
him ‘til next year"
Yeah what you don’t
understand
Is someday he’ll be
a man
With or without you, I know
he’ll be fine
Beyond a shadow of a doubt
Your halo will burn out
And he won’t see what
you are in his young eyes
Chorus:
You’re God’s gift
to little boys
Bringer of happiness and toys
The man who lit the sun and
hung the moon
But if you could only see
The way he cries after you
leave
And on every holiday when
you don’t come through
Then you’d want to be
the man he sees in you
He was up before the sun
With his little jammies on
Jumping up and down, "Moma,
get up he’s coming today!"
You said you’d pick
him up at noon
But it’s 5:22
He ain’t worried, because
he don’t know you that
way
Chorus:
Because you’re God’s
gift to little boys
Bringer of Happiness and toys
The man who lit the sun and
hung the moon
But if you could only see
The way he cries after you
leave
And on every holiday when
you don’t come through
Then you’d want to be
the man he sees in you
You know they’re only
young and small for about
five minutes
And he’ll never know
you’re gone if you weren’t
in it.
He fell asleep waiting for
you
In his backpack and his shoes
With the picture that he drew
for your surprise
The last thing he said to
me
Before he drifted off to sleep
Is, "Daddy’s my
best friend, and I know he’ll
come this time"
Chorus:
Because you’re God’s
gift to little boys
Bringer of Happiness and toys
The man who lit the sun and
hung the moon
But if you could only see
The way he cries after you
leave
And on every holiday when
you don’t come through
Then you’d want to be
the man he sees in you
Don’t you want to be
the man he sees in you?
